The TXII

An evolution of the world-famous TX1, the TXII was introduced by LTI Vehicles in early 2002.

Major differences over the TX1 include:

  • A change of engine from Nissan to the Ford Dura Torq
  • Tougher gear box materials, for longer life
  • Tougher seat material for greater durability, which is also easier to clean
  • Improved electrostatic coating and paint for greater protection to the bodywork
  • An improved aerial for better clarity, longer life and easy replacement
  • A new rear coil spring suspension and front anti-roll bar for improved ride and comfort for both driver and passenger
  • A new automatic intermittent wiper system when the vehicle slows to less than 5mph
  • An improved intercom and speaker system for easier communication between driver and passenger
  • Improved integrated wheelchair ramp for easier wheelchair access

TXII major components

TXII engine

The Dura Torq engine offers superb driveability with extreme flexibility. The high torque delivery at low engine speed sets the Dura Torq engine apart. Torque is increased by an astonishing 21% compared with its predecessor.

The Dura Torq engine achieves its widely publicised efficiency by clever use of electronics and low weight/low energy materials. Electronic engine management is the most efficient way to control and govern extreme high pressure diesel fuel injection. The use of composite materials reduces weight and also noise and vibration. Lightweight components reduce parasitic drag that would otherwise waste energy. Low drag material such as the special steel piston rings and molybdenum pads on the piston walls minimise drag. All of this contributes to the highest levels of efficiency and improved fuel consumption.

TXII transmission

Automatic Transmission

A development of the successful and durable Jatco JR402 used for many years in Fairway and TX1 is now re-calibrated and custom matched to the Dura Torq engine's flatter torque curve with increased low speed torque, smooth power delivery and reduced operating noise.

Manual Transmission

Proven and durable, the Ford MT75 5-speed transmission is manufactured with the latest technology and now with increased casing rigidity and the latest composite construction shift lever technology, reduces noise and vibration and improves gearshift precision and feel. Synchromesh is even on reverse gear. Ergonomically located shift lever and special transmission fluid eases gear operation throughout the vehicle's arduous operating cycle. Carefully chosen ratios match engine output to road speed for the efficient use of available power.

The transmission incorporates an internally mounted vehicle speed sensor for cable free speedometer operation which also provides the taximeter speed output. Minimum servicing is required. The clutch has short travel low pedal effort operation by means of a lightweight external plug-in clutch slave cylinder.

Braking System

The TXII achieves unrivalled levels of braking efficiency. At the front, a purpose designed disc brake system with vented discs and four-piston callipers as found in leading sports and competition cars, and at the rear, large, robust drums with self-adjusters. In addition the brake hydraulic system is split in H/I configuration for maximum safety and driver confidence. The result is great feel and progressive braking with less effort and low maintenance.

Asbestos-free materials are used throughout and a brake pad wear indicator lamp is an added safety feature. The redesigned handbrake lever as part of a new centre console, complements the already well established and reliable braking system.
