Accessibility issues
LTI has been building accessible taxis since 1985. Our aim is to ensure our taxis are accessible to wheelchair users, those with sight and hearing difficulties and other people with disabilities.
In the absence of specific guidelines for taxis in the 1995 Accessibility Discrimination Act, we have taken into account opinions from a wide range of sources including the Mobility and Inclusion unit of the Department for Transport, DPTAC and many national and local disability groups.
As a result, our TX Series models include the following accessibility features:
- Integral fold-out ramp with extension
- Four-point wheelchair restraint belt with over-centre clamp
- Demountable intermediate non-slip step
- Rear swivel seat for ambulant disabled passengers
- Yellow grab handles and seat edges for poorly sighted passengers
- Built-in induction loop and intercom in rear
- Easy release lit exterior door handles for the arthritic
- Child restraint harness with lap and adjustable diagonal seat belts
- Optional powered swivel seat that lowers to the floor of the cab
There are many issue confronting local authorities considering the introduction of accessible taxis, for example the need for a training programme for drivers. We would be delighted to talk to you about our experience in helping authorities introduce accessible taxi fleets.
